WordPress: Disable Comments From Pages Permanently

You can easily disable comments from any post or page by un-checking “allow comments” option while posting but the drawback to this is that this places “Comments are closed” message at the end of that certain post/page. While it’s great to have comments on your posts, it’s really weird to have comments on your pages like contact us, archives etc. The best solution here is to simply remove comments on pages from your theme. By doing that you will not see “Comments are closed” message either.

To remove comments from pages permanently:

  • From your wordpress admin panel, go to “Editor” under the category of “Appearance”.
  • Edit “Page Template (page.php)”
  • Look around for

    <div id=”comments”><?php comments_template(); ?></div>

  • Replace that with

    <div id=”comments”><?php //comments_template(); ?></div>

  • Update/save the file.

Catalog Your CDs and DVDs With Cathy

Being a HUGE downloader of softwares, music and movies; my hard disk is always near to full. I’ve to burn all of that on DVDs to keep some space available. After burning that all on DVDs, if I ever want to re-use any of that, it becomes really hard for me to search that in different DVDs. Cathy is an extremely small (44 KB), useful & free application that comes really handy in such situations. Cathy can be used to index and catalog CDs, DVDs and even hard disks. You can then easily search Cathy for anything that you ever stored on any of the storage devices and Cathy will tell you the location and name of the storage device. So if you burn lots of DVDs and CDs, this is a must-use tool for you guys.

Make Bootable USB to Install Windows 7

I was reading Harris Nadeem’s post at SizzledCore which mentioned a great utility by askvg and it’s so useful that I thought I must share it with my readers (if any).

The utility allows you to mount the complete setup of windows 7 on a USB in a bootable format. The utility will be very handy for netbooks and notebooks. A lot of times you don’t have DVD ROM drives, and Floppy drives are too obsolete to be part of the new computers, so booting becomes a problem.

You need:

  • A 4GB USB drive
  • DVD or ISO of Windows 7
  • Host OS (Windows Vista), Server 2008 or Windows 7

You will need to:

  • Check USB drive
  • Format USB drive
  • Mount from DVD or ISO
  • Start the process

You can download the utility here.

Tasks Getting Better, GMail Labs

GMail Labs introduces a new feature keeping the usual Google moto in mind “Simple and Fast”. You can now turn the tasks on and off and can manage them from your GMail’s navigation bar. No need to turn the feature or or off from the labs anymore. GMail Labs say

We’ve been continually improving Tasks since it first launched in Labs. We believe simple and fast is best, so we’ve been working to make Tasks more responsive and get basic interactions working better: we’ve added mobile and gadget views, made improvements to task editing and management, launched in more languages, and integrated with Google Calendar. We’ve also added a printable view for those people compelled to do things away from their computers or mobile devices.

Shift to SFTP, Secure Your Site From Hackers

Just right now I was reading a post on Slashdot in which they provided some great information on protecting yourself from hackers by shifting from FTP to SFTP. Slashdot says that 90 % of attacks are done by using stolen credentials of an FTP account. I highly recommend you to read all other risks at the original post. SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) will provide better encryption, hence protecting you from FTP attacks. Just follow these instructions to shift to SFTP, the credit for this goes to Slashdot again.

Here are the steps it took me to enable SFTP on my GoDaddy hosting account. Feel free to use this as a reference, but the obvious point is that as long as this many steps are required, it’s safe to say that most users won’t be switching:

  1. Go to the “Hosting” menu and pick “My Hosting Account”.
  2. Next to the name of your website, pick “Manage Account”. This will open the Hosting Control Center.
  3. In Hosting Control Center, click to expand the “Settings” options.
  4. In the “Settings” control panel, click the “SSH” icon.
  5. You will see a page saying “SSH is not set up”, and prompting you to enter a phone number so that their automated service can call you with a PIN number. After you enter your phone number, the phone rings a second later, and you enter the PIN in a form on the GoDaddy website.
  6. You will then see a page which says:

Current Hosting Account Status: Pending Account Change
Your request to enable SSH is being processed. This upgrade may take up to 24 hours.

Use Computer as Guitar Amplifier & Processor

Being a musician and a tech blogger, I’ve lots of cool guitar applications. When I started off playing guitar, tuning it was a difficult task for me. AP tuner is a simple cool free app that all the beginners might use for tuning their guitars.

Initially I didn’t have a processor with my guitar and so I came across this cool application called Guitar Rig. Guitar Rig allows you to convert your computer in to a guitar amplifier. With guitar rig you can play every effect pedal that is ever created and you dreamt of. The only con is that you need to have a very fast computer to avoid delay. The software also comes with a hardware pedal which can be connected to the computer via USB 2.0. The software cost 499 USD. For free download links you may search torrents at google.

To add some drum beats you may use Acoustica Beatcraft. This is what I used.
